Chicago Referencing Formatting Style Guide

The Chicago referencing style is used extensively for American Style English. IT was published by the University of Chicago Press in the year 1906. Presently the seventeenth edition of formatting, citation and writing guidelines is being followed for Chicago referencing.

General Guidelines
The paper should be written using 12 pt. Times New Roman font with double spacing on a standard sized paper (8.5”x 11”) with a margin of 1” on all four sides. The alignment of the entire writing should be made justified.

The page numbers should be put in the right hand top corner.

The paper consists of three main sections: Title Page, Main Body and Bibliography.

Title Page
The first page must contain the title of the written paper. The title must be written in block letters, centre aligned in a position a third of the way down the page. The name of the person preparing the report, class information and date must be written in the following lines. Each of the sub-title line must end with a colon followed by the next sub-title line and so on. The entire title page should be written in double spacing format.

Main Body

[Heading 1] should be middle aligned, bold using 12 pt. Times New Roman font. The first letter of each of the words must be in caps except for articles and conjunctions.

[Heading 2] should be middle aligned, regular using 12 pt. Times New Roman font. The first letter of each of the words must be in caps except for articles and conjunctions.

[Heading 3] should be left aligned, bold using 12 pt. Times New Roman font. The first letter of each of the words must be in caps except for articles and conjunctions.

Each paragraph in the main body of the paper must have a single tab.

Bibliography and Citations
A bibliography in Chicago referencing style provides a list of all the source used in the paper in an alphabetical format. The Bibliography page comes at the end of the paper. It includes additional sources that has not been cited in the paper but provided as a further reading material.

  • It must be written at the end of the paper and arranged in an alphabetical format.
  • The word Bibliography should be written in Heading 1 format regular using 12pt. Times New Roman font, alphabetically arranged and with hanging indentation.
  • For sources having more than two authors, “and” must be used.
  • The names of all the authors must be written for sources having two to three authors in both bibliography and footnotes.
  • For sources having four to ten authors, the names of all the authors must be written in bibliography while in the footnotes, only the first name followed by et al. must be used.

Basics of Referencing
Footnotes for In-Text Citations:
The portions paraphrased or quoted from someone else’s work must be cited properly using in-text citations.

In case of Chicago referencing, footnotes are included every time a source is being used in the paper. Footnotes are added at the end of each page of the source referenced. A superscript number corresponding to every reference in the bibliography list is provided in the footnotes of the respective pages.
